Tips to Speed-up Your Blogger Blog

On In 2 Comments
If you have checked your blog's speed using the Google PageSpeed Insights tool, you might have got many suggestions to improve speed. I have also got many suggestions to improve my blog's speed; like Leverage browser caching, Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content, Optimize images, Minify JavaScript, Minify HTML, Reduce server response time etc. Unfortunately, we can't fix those since we have no control over the Server. However, here are some tips which may be useful for you to improve your blog's speed. Please note that the tips here mentioned are for Blogger blog only. I'm not sure whether it works with Wordpress or Websites.

1. Use One of Blogger’s Default Templates

2. Reduce the Number of Posts on Home Page: It is recommended to use only five-seven posts on the main page.

How to change the number of posts showing on the main page: Go to your Blog's dashboard and select Layout from the drop down list. Click on Blog Posts --> Edit.

Configure blog posts

3. Use "Read More" Link for Posts: When you create longer posts, use "Read More".

How to add "Read More" link: On the Blogger draft page, place the cursor below your first paragraph (or on the spot where you want the "read more" link to appear) and click on the Jump Break Icon. You can also change the "Read More" text by editing the field next to "Post page link text".

See the above screenshot.

4. Upload Images via Blogger Draft: You may upload all images directly through the Blogger draft. It means that if you use any third party images, first save them to your computer, and upload via the Blogger draft. The images will be stored in your Picasa Web Album [picasaweb.google.com]. You can use Ms Paint to resize and crop images or even changing the image formats.

How to upload images to your blog: On your draft page, click on the "picture" icon on the top. Now click the upload button and choose files from your computer.

Image Tips:

Avoid putting picture links from external sites like Flickr, Photobucket, Imageshack.
Use only jpg, png or gif images.
Reduce the number of images per post.
Decrease the size of images if the original size is larger.
Use CSS instead of images when possible.

5. Header/Background Images: If you use an image as your blog's background, no doubt; it would take a long time to load. So use either a color as background or patterns with few k/b in size (The Patterns can be repeated; horizontally, vertically or as tiles). Use small-sized images for Header also.

Add/Remove background images: Go to your Blogger Dashboard and select Template from the drop down list. Click Customise and select Background. Remove the full width background image. Now upload your image which is of few kilobytes in size. Make sure to select the tiles option.

Change background color: After removing the full width background, make sure to click on "Use default background and colors". Now go to Template --> Customise --> Advanced and select Page. Select your background color and click Apply to Blog.

6. Custom CSS: Put all your custom CSS by going to the below link:

Blogger Dashboard --> Customise --> Advanced --> Add CSS

7. Javascript: It is recommended to use Blogger's built-in gadgets to reduce loading time. Try to reduce the number of third party gadgets/widgets which contains Javascripts. If you have too many Javascripts and links, consider uploading them to a single external source. You can use Google Sites [sites.google.com] to upload Javascripts. Check out the below example:

<script src='https://sites.google.com/site/yourgooglesite/home/yourscript.js' type='text/javascript'/>

<script src='https://sites.google.com/site/yourgooglesite/home/myscript.js' type='text/javascript'/>
