Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan had 16 children, but many of them died in infancy. The mother of his 14 children was Mumtaz Mahal. At the time of Mumtaz's death eight children were alive. The four daughters were Purhunar Bano Begum (daughter of Shah Jahan by another wife), Jahan-Ara Begum, Roshan-Ara Begum and Gauhar Ara Begum. Prince Khurram afterwards Shah Jahan was the third son of Mughal emperor Jahangir. Jahangir's eldest sons Khusrau and Parveiz had died before their father. Nur Jahan (Queen of Jahangir) wanted her son-in-law Shahryar (who was the fourth son of Jahangir) to ascend the throne but Shah Jahan's army defeated him. Shah Jahan thus ascended the throne of his father in 1627.
